Black Jack 21 Card Counting- Back Counting Advantages And Disadvantages

By Anthony McCoy

The process of Back-Counting, is professionally known as "Wonging", It's basically a process when someone is standing behind the dealers table in which also has players on, and when the cards are being dealt, a count is also being taken. The proposed idea of Back- Counting was brought forward by Stanford Wong, and naturally because his name is Wong, the process was also named that.

Once the count is at a point which the player has an advantage, the player will then enter the game, or "wong in". As there advantages raises, the player may raise there bets, or lower them if the advantage is going down. Many players rather prefer a flat bet when back counting, and continue to bet that exact amount when they enter the game. Some players may "Wong out" or leave the game when the count is at a point when there is no advantage, or stay until the game is shuffled.

"Wonging" is commonly applied to shoe games, consisting of either 4, 6, or 8 decks, but can also be done on pitch games of either 1 or 2 decks as well. The reason, or purpose for this is because the count will be more stable in a shoe game, so you won't see players getting up from the game after only one or two hands. Not to mention, casinos today prevent a player from starting in the middle of the game, also known as mid-shoe entry, in either a single or double deck game eliminating the chance to "wong" the table. Casinos are putting more pressure in the effort to stop card counters effectiveness on both pitch and shoe games.

Back-counting is a bit different from your traditional card-counting, and that is that the players do not play every single hand. This offers a few advantages. For one, the player will not play any hands at which he does not have a statistical advantage. This will reduces variance and fluctuations in the game, while increasing the advantage of that player. Another great advantage is that players does not have to alter their bet size as much, or at all if they choose. Big changes in a bet size are method that casinos look for to detect card-counters, and this is eliminated with back-counting.

There are a few disadvantages to back-counting. One is that the player frequently does not stay at the table long enough to earn comps from the casino. Another disadvantage is that some players may become irritated with players who enter in the middle of a game, and superstitiously believe that this interrupts the "flow" of the cards. Lastly, a player who hops in and out of games may attract unwanted attention from casino personnel, and may be detected as a card-counter.
