Which of Your Poker Images Should You Hang on to?

By Thomas Kearns

It may be entirely beyond the average poker player that at any moment of the game he or she projects a specific image. Players are either unaware of the fact that an image had better be consciously maintained or trying to avoid projecting any image by assuming a sort of somberly inexpressive expression. Shielded behind shades and baseball cap, unsmiling, moodily silent, they believe that they thus "minimize" communication with the rest of the table.

But unless they completely disappear - did Welles's invisible man play poker? - they will always project just enough information for good players to exploit. They are not only likely to attract other and better skilled silent scarecrows similar to themselves, but they are also likely to scare away those players who would otherwise constitute the bulk of their regular income.

To become utterly neutral is not the same as to become beyond observation. Active controlled communication with opponents, when managed correctly, is likely to yield much better result than a blank attitude. A blank attitude is most probably, in most cases, a sign of weakness rather than of sense or strength.

If it is a retreat from controlled active participation, it is always a weakness (the alternative is not hyperactivity, but balanced calculated manipulation). Moreover, these players probably do not suspect that for the skilled opponent they probably still have tells of one type or another somewhere about their inevitably, even if reluctantly, living breathing person.

A non-serious player will look for a table where folks seem to be having fun. They will cruise around the room until they stumble upon the table with laughing friendly players gathered around. They are not looking for a serious game but for some fun and so a potential opponent's skills are not a priority.

On the other hand, those that play poker as a profession are also looking for that table of good time Charlies. Nothing like a bunch of fun loving amateurs to whet the pros appetite for the game. The laughing amateur will linger at the table as long as he has having fun and may not even notice he is losing his shirt. He will not play with a bunch of non-communicative, somber zombies.

Sparkling conversation and a sense of fun in combination with compliments on others play will keep an amateur in a trusting frame of mind and keep him returning to that table again and again. They don't play for an income or for the thrill of risk so they will not be upset by losing to an amusing opponent.

By keeping weaker opponents in a fun frame of mind, you encourage their high hopes of lady luck finding her way to them. Lady luck will visit occasionally and turn them into frequent players and attract still more fun-loving amateurs to the table. If you display a cold attitude, they will leave.

The best professionals are aware that they project an image and so are cautious as to what that image is at any given time. They have created an image to add to their interests, not to shun others. They have learned their superior technique through experience and have learned to manipulate the game to their advantage by creating a persona that establishes a positive environment in which everyone wants to join in including the heedless, fun-loving victim. - 31406

How to Do Stage Magic Card Tricks

By James Wong

A common principle used by magician to produce something on stage from a hidden place which is demonstrated in the classic decanter magic trick. A handkerchief is pulled by a thread rapidly to appear inside a transparent decanter placed on a table. This pulling thread principle could be used in various different situations to produce objects as the magician desires.

Another application of the same principle is the use of the elastic cord instead of the thread. This also, working like the thread, brings the object from a concealed hiding place. A familiar example is The Card Sword, or a similar device for producing a handkerchief. Here the elastic extends through the hollow blade and emerges at the tip. The cards or handkerchiefs are attached to the end of the elastic. The elastic is stretched out and brought down behind the blade so that the cards or silks may be concealed within a hiding place at the handle.

When the elastic is released the production springs into view at the tip of the blade. The principle is still the same as that in the decanter trick. Here are the familiar hiding place, the object to be produced, the location at which it is produced, and a means of bringing the object to its destination suddenly. Basically, the only difference is that the performer applies the power before the performance. The energy is expended when he stretches the elastic. This power remains stored up for use until needed.

In the above variation the change is in the indirect application of the power prior to performance. You need not use a sword. A broom, a long stick, a cane or anything supplying sufficient length of elastic to allow the object to be produced to reach its hiding place, and with sufficient "take-up" to bring the object to its place of appearance, will do. This principle has been used for years to bring a rose, concealed beneath the armpit, into the buttonhole. It could cause a necktie to appear-perhaps it has.

For stage workers, they may consider incorporating such device in their stage act. For example, they may bring in a coil of rope and scissor magically with the pulling device. And then they can move in to do a cut and restored rope routine. How about a deck of cards for some card manipulation actions?

Think about other ways to apply the force required to bring the object into view. This will be very useful to adapt the trick to different applications. An assistant can be used to pull the thread at the right moment. Or a counterweight is released to pull the thread. Other mechanical device that produces suitable force can be considered. If the method of a stored power is used, elastic chords or springs can be used. - 31406

Invent New Magic Tricks with Old Magic Principles

By Matthew Wong

Everyday there are new magic tricks selling in the market. To tell you the truth, many of them are produced using one thousand year old methods. You too can produce an innovative magic effect by using old principles. For example, the old decanter trick is used to produce a handkerchief in a transparent decanter. We can change the appearance of the trick by switching the objects used in the effect. We could use a wine bottle instead of the decanter, or a rubber water bottle or anything else. We could produce a belt instead of a handkerchief, or anything that works. You can reproduce ten thousand new effect just by substituting the props.

Sometimes a very little change made in an old magic effect can make a huge difference. The change may be even smaller than using a different container. We now compare another trick that look completely different from the decanter trick, but in fact utilizes the very same thread pulling principle.

The Spider Web Trick is also to produce something by pulling the object quickly into view just as the decanter trick. The spider web trick still uses a thread which is the most important part of the trickery. But Orrin switched a card for the handkerchief. A cool spider figure is used instead of a transparent decanter. A disc decorated to look like a spider web is used instead of a plain table.

Orrin made an important change to the trick or even the principle by changing the moving part from the appearing object to the appearing location. He produced the card by moving the spider quickly. And moreover, he turned the web and let the thread to wrap around to produce the tension to pull the card. Originally, a hiding assistant or a counterweight is used as the driving tension. The magician pulled the thread himself by turning the web disc. This excellently covered the pulling action.

I don't suppose Mr. Orrin consciously went through the various steps of deliberate substitution, working from the old decanter trick, as outlined here. But it could have been produced in that manner.

The follow steps can be gone through to produce the spider trick. Firstly, the appearing object is changed to a spectator chosen card instead of a handkerchief. Secondly, the location of appearance is completely changed to a spider figure instead of the original transparent decanter. Thirdly, the magician pulled the thread himself instead of using a helping assistant. Fourthly, the location of appearance is moved with high speed instead of the produced object. Fifthly, a camouflaged background is used to cover the thread, the path, the secret pocket and the action. This makes it a much more deceiving magic effect.

It may seem that the decanter trick and the spider web trick are completely different magic effects. But after analysis, we see that they are much related. Readers can also produce new tricks by changing some elements in an old trick. - 31406

Amazing Magic Tricks Revealed

By James Wong

Have you ever seen the magic trick which the magician magically produce a handkerchief inside a transparent decanter? By using the same principle, we can do amazing magic tricks, too. We start off by using different objects, like a picture instead of a handkerchief. You can use whatever things to do the trick, but the object would decide what you can do with it. You would also need a proper hiding place for it, too. Like a picture, it can be rolled up and hide in the edge of a photo frame.

The pulling of the thread can also be done with indirect forces instead of a simple pull. By rotating the frame, the thread would wind up and tension is built up to pull out the photo with high speed. The frame could be rotated horizontally or it can be mounted on a backing and a turntable to be rotated vertically.

And then experiments should be carried out to test various hiding and pulling method. Find a place to hide the photo so that it is invisible while standing by and pulling out. Numerous trials would be needed to ensure the successful movement of the photo or picture every time the turning is executed.

There are many different ways to pull the thread. You could spin the frame, or you could pull the thread with counterweight. One possible way is to fasten the other end of the thread to a fixture on stage. Then the magician can walk forward or away from the fixture with the frame holding in his hands. The thread will be pulled and the picture appears.

Think about what container to use. Choose one that suits the whole theme of the magic act. You could cause a rose to appear in a vase magically but fixing a vase on a turnable table and turn it quickly. The rose could be hidden in a secret pocket in the table.

The same principle has been applied to non-apparatus magic. The hands are substituted for the decanter. The space behind the vest takes the place of the pocket in the table. The thread still remains. Secured to two corners of a large flag, the thread extends across the top. The flag is folded and tucked beneath the vest, leaving the thread extending across the body. In a flash the flag is produced merely by hooking the thumbs under the thread and extending the arms forward and apart. Properly done, the flag seems to appear suddenly between the two hands. This may be used for a flash production of almost anything concealed beneath the vest, the coat or within a pocket.

With one end of the thread attached to a firm foundation, just hooking one thumb beneath it and pushing forward suddenly will make it possible to produce a silk, a flower, or some small device with which you work. - 31406

How to Do Simple Production Magic Tricks

By James Wong

Sometimes magician can produce an object by pretending the required work has been done but in fact he only does the work while audience's attention is directed away. Somewhat similar to this is loading a new object in the act of taking away that produced. A familiar repeating cigar production illustrates this perfectly.

One cigar is produced and placed in the opposite hand. But while the right is placing it in the left, the left hand is loading another, unseen, into the right. There are probably nine hundred and seventy-five thousand ways this principle of secretly loading while attention is elsewhere might be disguised, cloaked, counterfeited or otherwise camouflaged.

It is almost impossible to list every object that can be produced with this method. I recommend you to memorize the principle, do some experiments with it and try to apply it to your magic routines. The only limitation is your imagination.

The next most common way to produce an object is to use speed. The magician brings out something so fast that spectators' eyes are fooled and thinks that an object has been produced. It is said that the hand is quicker than the eye, but in fact that is impossible. Some sort of help is used to achieve high speed like that.

As hands do not give the required speed to produce such effect, some other devices are used. The common ones are the pulled string, elastic pulling device and spring pulling device. There are also other machines used to provide the required force like counterweight, electric motor, steam engine. Anything that can pull out the object with a suitable force and speed can be utilized.

The invisible thread jerks the object into view from its secret hiding place so swiftly that its flight cannot be seen. The appearing handkerchief in the decanter is a good illustration. The handkerchief is concealed within a pocket in the table. Tied to the handkerchief is a strong thread. This leads down into the neck of the bottle, through a hole in the bottom or a side, and thence offstage to an assistant. Sometimes the thread is tied to a weight which can be released suddenly. A sudden swift jerk brings the handkerchief into sight within the decanter. - 31406
